Dr Paolo Ferrazzi is a cardiovascular surgeon and, at present, is Director of the Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy and Valvular Heart Disease Surgical Center at the Policlinico in Monza (Italy). Dr Ferrazzi has previously directed the Cardiovascular Department in the Ospedali Riuniti in Bergamo, and the Cardiac Surgery Department at the FCR Massa-Pisa for almost 20 years. In the 1980s, he has worked for about a year with Dr Kirklin in Birmingham, Alabama, and later with Professor Carpentier in Paris.
During his surgical career, Dr Ferrazzi has performed the first heart and lung transplant in Italy, in 1991, and more than 11000 open-heart operations, ranging from congenital heart surgery to mitral valve repair and heart transplantation. He has also had a large experience with experimental surgery, including more than 300 operations in large animals. During his stay in the United States, and under the guidance of Dr, Kirklin, he had the opportunity to participate in the surgical management of obstructive hypertrophic cardiomyopathy and became fascinated with the complexity of this disease. On the basis of this previous experience, and using his surgical expertise with the treatment of congenital heart diseases and mitral valve repair, in the 1990s Dr Ferrazzi started to perform transaortic septal myectomies in patients with obstructive hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. During the last 10 years, he has performed more than 700 septal myectomies, with about 250 myectomy operations in the last three years.Back to speakers
