Pavan Atluri is a Professor of Surgery at the University of Pennsylvania.  He is clinically focused on surgical management of complex mitral valve disease and advanced therapies for heart failure.  He is particularly interested in the minimally invasive treatment of mitral valve disease, indications for asymptomatic mitral valve disease, expanding indications and donor allograft utilization for heart transplantation, and destination left ventricular assist device utilization.  Additionally, he has a translational research laboratory that is funded by the National Institutes of Health of the United States studying tissue engineered therapies for heart failure.  Particular research strategies include targeted polymersome mediated antioxidant delivery, nanoparticle based therapeutic targeted delivery of small molecules to preserve post-ischemia reperfusion injury heart function, and intramyocardial delivery of injectable hydrogel encapsulated mesenchymal stem cell derived extracellular vesicles.  He has published extensively with over 300 publications in major peer reviewed journals. Pavan holds leadership positions within the American Heart Association, American Association for Thoracic Surgery, and the Society for Thoracic Surgeons.
