Jan Marek

Professor Jan Marek is a Consultant Cardiologist with expertise in paediatric and prenatal cardiology and cardiovascular imaging. He has been working at Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children (GOSH) since 2005 after a previous 20-year professional career at University Hospital Motol, Prague, Czech Republic. Jan is a Professor at the Institute of Cardiovascular Sciences at University College London (UCL) and Charles University, Prague.

Jan trained as a paediatric cardiologist in Prague, Houston, and Toronto. Since 1991 he has specialised in prenatal cardiology and paediatric cardiovascular imaging and contributed to establishing specialist centers and departments in Prague, (University Hospital Motol), Munich (Deutsches Herzzentrum), and London (GOSH). He contributed a great deal to establishing a nationwide prenatal screening program in Czechoslovakia in 1985-1990. Jan completed five grants as a principal investigator and published more than 150 peer-reviewed articles. He published one textbook as a monograph and contributed to several other books and teaching materials.

Among others, he served as Chair of the Paediatric Cardiology working group of the Czech Society of Cardiology, as a member of the council of the Fetal Working Group of the Association of European Paediatric Cardiology (AEPC), and as a Chair of the Imaging Working Group of the AEPC. Jan has been organiser and co-organiser of European educational programs including European accreditation in Echocardiography in Congenital Heart Disease under the European Society of Cardiology (ESC) and the European Association of Cardiovascular Imaging (EACVI), he serves as a National Examiner for accreditation in Echocardiography under EACVI. In 2016 he founded Smart Heart Imaging & Teaching focusing on teaching diagnostic echocardiography worldwide. 

Jan`s professional activity includes extensive charity work; he is the patron of a Czech group of families of children with heart conditions “Srdickari” (“Sweethearts”). In 2018, Professor Marek was awarded by Honorary Silver Jan Masaryk medal by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Czech Republic for outstanding contribution to the development of relations between the Czech Republic and the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. In 2023, Jan was awarded Gratias Agit by the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Czech Republic for promoting the good name of the Czech Republic abroad.
