Dr Hershberger’s principal research focus has been to discover the genetic basis of dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) and translate those findings into the practice of cardiovascular medicine. His work has been funded by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute of the National Institutes of Health nearly continuously throughout his career, and he has authored numerous scientific articles, reviews, and guideline statements for the field. In 2010, he developed the DCM Consortium, a multisite investigative group, to conduct family-based genetic research in DCM. The DCM Consortium recently completed the DCM Precision Medicine Study that was designed to test the hypothesis that most of DCM has a genetic basis, which has contributed numerous publications to the field.
